Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) - New DTLLSThe Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) course has replaced the Level 5 Diploma in the Lifelong Sector (DTLLS). The course is not only open to teachers who work in traditional settings such as universities and colleges. The course is also available to trainers, instructors, coaches regardless of their geographical location as long as you have access to 100 teaching hours (including those who teach on a one to one basis).

This course is regarded as equivalent to the Certificate of Education (CertEd). It is also a good alternative to the Postgraduate Certificate in Education. This Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training will enable you to apply for QTLS and be a recognised qualified teacher.

Teachers with QTLS can also teach in schools.Vocational Learning encourages candidates to submit naturally occurring evidence from their work environment to demonstrate competency against the practical requirements of the course. We welcome other evidence such as prior learning and do not just rely on assignments. This can include schemes of work, assessment reports, course resources and communication records.The course has a 360 hours guided learning requirement. The total qualification time is 1200 hours. You are usually expected to complete this course within 5 to 12 months depending on the combination of units you have selected and progress.

Entry RequirementsThis course is open to anyone who can evidence 100 hours of teaching. Your teaching delivery can either be with an individual or group of learners. You will be expected to have basic numeracy, literacy and IT skills in line with national occupational skills for teachers. You are also expected to have access to the internet, multimedia computer, printer and a word processor that can open and produce Microsoft Word Documents ending with the extension ‘.doc’. Candidates without Microsoft office are advised to consider free software such as. You, however, need to ensure your documents are saved and submitted for assessment as word documents ending with the extension ‘.doc’? What it means studying at Level 5?You will be assessed at the same level as someone completing the second year of an undergraduate degree.

Achievement at Level 5 reflects the ability to identify and use relevant understanding, methods and skills to complete tasks and address problems that, while well defined, have a measure of complexity. It includes taking responsibility for initiating and completing tasks and procedures as well as exercising autonomy and judgment. You will be expected to use references and reflect awareness of different perspectives or approaches within your area of study or work. How long is the course?We are often asked how quick someone can complete this course? This depends on a number of factors which includes your own commitment, the quality of your evidence, time, learning and assessment opportunities and your ability to study at a high level. Candidates joining the course with evidence of prior learning and credits from other qualifications will obviously be able to complete quicker than someone without.

If you invest more time on the course such as 15 hours a week then you will most likely complete earlier compared to someone who commits less time. Please bear in mind that you will be required to evidence learning and participate in course activities. This is a regulated qualification that will be quality assured and monitored by awarding bodies and Ofqual. We however expect you to complete the course within 5 to 12 months.

CertificationThis is a recognised regulated qualification that will be awarded by an Ofqual regulated awarding body. Evaluate how your session met the needs of individual learners.This essay should be prepared following completion of your micro-teach session, and it has two parts. The first part gives you an opportunity to discuss your approaches to teaching and the effectiveness of the resources you have used. Feedback from piers and the observer report will help you to complete the second part; which is evaluation of how you met the needs of the learner group.My flexible lesson plan assumed learners did not have prior knowledge of the subject and I prepared it from the learner’s point of view. The session was multi-sensory, focused around the objectives, and included verbal, visual, and kinaesthetic activities.The PowerPoint slides included major points to be covered – organised and clear.

I wanted learners to understand these points and to accept my ideas. I knew it will not need much effort because the subject Employee Training (HRM) is partly related to the course PTLLS.I used a small for navigating through the PowerPoint slides.My approach combined a lecture with active teaching and learning strategies. Everyone was constantly engaged in the learning process through open questions, discussions, and two activities for applying what they have learnt. The key terms were identified, explained and put together, and the learners copied them down.The objectives were made clear at the start of the session and I gave explanation in clear language making full use of the auditory style; I repeated and emphasized important parts of the lecture. A short video was used to demonstrate real-life techniques, and the carefully selected images supported the text where I wanted Learners to remember important concepts.The lecture was concluded by an interactive strategy which was engaging and provided real-life simulation situations; learners practised important parts of the subject and they were able to know how, in addition to why, we do things. Also, calling learners by their names during the session helped in reaching everyone.Student-led question and answer session, debates and the feedback session, comments and critiques all made the session interesting and met the different students’ learning styles. The learners were comfortable, able to discuss new ideas and eager to learn. I believe careful planning and preparation have helped.
